As any significant honors show draws close, there’s always a clamor for the addition fresh award types to recognize underappreciated efforts and satisfy the hearts of fans dedicated to specific genres.
A fellow writer has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. The same goes for strategy board titles, this being someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward since similar to single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request remains most pressing and significant. This is the request: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works is not a science; it remains highly personal, and typically generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason cinema institutions avoid this approach. However, it represents a necessary evil in the world of gaming, showing incredible range they barely qualify as a single art form.
For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.
Existing Game Classification System
Leading game ceremonies currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types successfully include numerous genres, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.
This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to put them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: structural challenges from a specific release, intense tile-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.
The Representation Problem
Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games published annually without proper recognition in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.
- One classic puzzle game got overlooked for anything that year
- A different innovative game received no nominations in 2019
- Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Only a few brain-teasers barely qualified for independent or mobile categories
Significance of Puzzle Games
Frequently they represent compact experiences, yet the craft behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games count as the most-played games worldwide continuing this trend for over a decade.
The legendary block-stacking game competes with popular creative games claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and engaging across multiple categories.
Proposal and Rationale
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.
Restating the point, these include experiences without proper classification at major gaming awards. Logic title developers function at the demanding boundary of video game design, creating some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Comparable to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay generations.
