Colombian Leader Declares 'I Shall Resort to Weapons Again' should US Intervenes Militarily.

The US President along with his Colombian counterpart have turned up the volume of their exchange, further raising tensions bilaterally after American military units struck Venezuela with the aim of deposing the leader of Venezuela Nicolás Maduro from his position.

"He operates cocaine mills and production sites and is not going to be doing it very long," Trump added.

Escalating Tensions and Allegations

Addressing journalists over the weekend, Trump hinted at analogous armed intervention against Bogotá, asserting the country is also "very ill" and governed by a problematic figure involved in producing cocaine and distributing it to the US."

While Colombia stands as the leading producer of cocaine, no proof exists linking President Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is in any way connected to the illicit industry.

A Frayed Alliance

Colombia for decades served as a staunch collaborator of the United States in the struggle combating drug cartels and received wide political approval from American politicians, but relations have soured significantly following Trump came to office.

Its narcotics trade is largely controlled by illegal armed groups including the Golf Clan, the National Liberation Army (ELN) and breakaway groups of the demobilized Farc, the majority of whose members laid down arms after a historic peace agreement.

Colombia's Firm Response

In response to a query if military intervention similar to Venezuela was on the cards regarding Colombia, Trump replied: "That seems like a good idea from my perspective."

President Petro, a former leftist guerrilla who left armed struggle decades ago, firmly denied the accusations. "I am not an illegitimate leader nor am I a drug trafficker," he stated.

"The US president speaks without knowledge. Cease defaming me," he expressed in a message.

"If they [the US] bomb rural communities, they will transform into a multitude of fighters in the hills. And if they detain me, whom a large part of Colombians holds in high esteem, they will provoke the fierce spirit of the people," Petro warned.

From Fighter to President

Petro spent part of his youth belonging with the radical M-19 insurgent movement though it is believed to have ever participated in combat. After demobilizing, he was involved in creating the constitutional rewrite over three decades ago and later became a prominent senator. He held the office of mayor of Bogotá prior to his election president.

"I made a vow not to touch arms again ... but for Colombia I will take up arms again," he affirmed.

Heightened Measures along with Broad Condemnation

Minister Pedro Sánchez stated that the president’s personal security had received additional support.

Several members of Colombia’s political right have allied themselves with Trump's stance, yet figures from across Colombian politics have condemned the possibility of American military action targeting Colombia.

Bilateral and Financial Sanctions

Washington cancelled his travel authorization following he called on US military personnel to ignore unlawful commands. Later, in October, the US enacted economic restrictions targeting Petro, his spouse and several close collaborators.

Simultaneously as the US increased its troop levels in the Caribbean and bombing alleged narcotics traffickers to put pressure on Venezuela’s Maduro, US forces have also conducted strikes against vessels in the eastern Pacific region adjacent to Colombia.
