A minimum of 13 people lose their lives and 98 injured in train derailment in Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's major public works projects.

The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” declared the national leader.

The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term finished the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's strategic vision for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The building of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic growth of its responsibilities in national works. They were built at an rapid speed, surpassing predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked significant apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an prior collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an immediate suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.

This stoppage was proposed pending a comprehensive technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."

In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been operating in total adherence to all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these strategic undertakings.
