A group of seven accused members of Germany's left-wing extremist group face trial over multiple violent incidents

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network went on trial on this week, accused for violent actions against rightwing extremists that resulted in the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

International terrorist designation and prosecution case

Recently, the US government designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization along with several other European far-left and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors claim the network was behind attacks on sites in the country and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are said to have employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some with serious injuries.

Trial details and international connections

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is expected to run until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, named as Johann G and Paul M., are additionally accused for violent incidents in Budapest during February 2023, coinciding with an annual event known as the “day of honor” that draws rightwing extremists from across Europe.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T, is currently on trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted assault against neo-Nazis prior to the identical event in that year.

Regional context and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, responsible for organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M, he is accused of organizing training sessions where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. At depots overseen by Paul M, the network allegedly accumulated tools, irritant sprays, disguises and mobile phones.

Prior legal cases and global responses

Another militant previously active with the group, Lina E, emerged as a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

The US designation renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the US, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the American economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing AfD party welcomed the US decision and called on the German administration to follow suit. However, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The threat from the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have either received convictions or remain detained.”
